Working Title: Learning from a New Old Town – Impact Research on Frankfurt’s Old Town Reconstruction
The research addresses the conceptual gap in regard to integrated empirical impact research in architecture and urbanism and explores this approach in the case of the New Old Town in Frankfurt am Main. The quarter exemplifies the much-discussed projects of the contemporary “reconstruction wave” (BMVBS 2010) in Germany, to which a variety of effects are attributed. This is particularly the case when, as in Dresden, Frankfurt and Potsdam, they extend to the urban scale and thus represent new central urban areas. However, the extent to which they unfold the expected – and other, unexpected – effects is not subject to empirical enquiry once the projects have been completed, meaning that the controversial debate remains without an empirical basis. The dissertation is therefore dedicated to an empirical assessment of the New Old Town, which opened in 2018. The in-depth empirical exploration reveals networked impacts between the mediation of history, reconstruction aesthetics and everyday urban life in the New Old Town.
