Representative and information commissioner of the German Society for Sociology in the Information and Communication Commission of the scientific societies in Germany since 1996. Since 1997, speaker of GLOBAL INFO Consortiums and Overall Project Director of the Priority Research Area GLOBAL INFO of the German Federal Ministry of Research and Technology and a key planning and coordination project on digital library concepts. On the advisory board of the European DELOS Network of Excellence on Digital Libraries since 1999. Member of the editorial board of the Journal on Digital Libraries since 200. Numerous university administrative functions, including the vice-presidency of the Technical University Darmstadt, 1997–1999.
